Rapidly Renewable

Rapidly Renewable

Flax grows in just 90 days, making it a fast, efficient resource—unlike trees, which take decades to mature.

Reduces Carbon

Reduces Carbon

Flax is a carbon-negative plant that requires no heavy fertilizers or intense irrigation, and it absorbs 1.4 kg CO₂ per kg of fiber as it grows—so its impact is not just neutral, but positive.

Supports Healthy Indoor Air

Healthy Indoor Air

ekoa is naturally super-low VOC and free from nasty chemicals, so there’s no harmful off-gassing— letting you breathe easy, literally.

Bio-based

Bio-Based

From flax to finish, ekoa is made without the petroleum-based stuff—just plant-based ingredients, not fossil fuels.

How ekoa is made, naturally.

Flax
Step 1

Flax plant

Carbon-negative flax is harvested, and with regrowth in 90 days, we maintain a sustainable, continuous supply of high-quality fibers.

Step 2

Roving

The dried fibers are organized and wound into long bundles of fiber for processing into textiles and fabric.

Roving
Fabric

Step 3

Flax fabric

The roving is made into a beautiful, unidirectional fabric that creates the base for our innovative composites.

Step 4

ekoa

Through our proprietary technology, we add plant resin to transform flax fabric into high-performance ekoa sheets.
ekoa
Human health

ekoa supports human health.

Indoor air pollution in homes, workplaces, and schools is often 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels, and it can be up to 100 times worse. Unlike traditional PVC wall protection products, ekoa is low VOC, making it a healthier choice for the spaces where we spend so much time.

Certifications

USDA Biobased
ekoa carries the USDA Certified Biobased Product label, confirming it is made primarily from renewable, plant-based materials. Specifically, 79% of ekoa’s content is derived from these sources—significantly surpassing the minimum 62% bio-based content required for certification in its product category. The remaining non-bio-based portion is a proprietary, Red List-free binder that enhances the material’s strength and supports its exceptionally low VOC emissions. This achievement sets ekoa apart in the commercial wallcovering and wall protection industry, where most products still rely heavily on petroleum-based materials.
Clean Air GOLD
The CleanAir GOLD certificate recognizes ekoa for its significantly lower VOC emissions compared to typical wallcoverings, particularly those made from PVC. With indoor air pollution in homes, workplaces, and schools frequently 2–5 times higher than outdoor levels, improving indoor air quality is more important than ever. Because it’s super-low VOC, ekoa contributes to healthier environments and helps projects meet rigorous green building standards such as LEED and WELL.
Red List Free
The Red List Free Declare Label certifies that ekoa contains none of the “worst-in-class” chemicals identified by the Living Building Challenge Red List that are known to pose serious risks to human health and the environment. This is especially significant because many conventional building materials and wallcoverings still contain toxic compounds like phthalates, formaldehyde, and flame retardants. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to respiratory problems, hormone disruption, cancer, and other health concerns, making their elimination a critical step toward creating healthier indoor spaces. With full ingredient transparency and a commitment to safer materials, ekoa helps set a new standard for wellness-focused design.
Health Product Declaration
The Health Product Declaration (HPD) offers complete transparency into the ingredients that make up ekoa. Developed according to the HPD Open Standard, this report details both product contents and any associated health information in a clear, consistent format. Widely recognized by green building programs, HPDs help architects and designers evaluate potential health impacts and make informed material choices for their projects. With more than 11,000 HPDs now published across the industry, this level of transparency is quickly becoming the norm—and is often required for projects seeking LEED, WELL, and other leading certifications.
Mindful MATERIALS
The mindful MATERIALS certification highlights ekoa’s dedication to transparency and sustainability across sourcing, ingredient health, and environmental impact. This label recognizes products that go beyond basic disclosures, meeting high standards for material health, environmental responsibility, and social equity—all mapped to the industry’s most comprehensive sustainability framework. By earning this certification, ekoa makes it easier for designers to choose materials that support healthier spaces and a more sustainable built environment.
Build America, Buy America Act (BABA)
The Build America, Buy America Act (BABA), enacted in November 2021, requires that iron, steel, manufactured products, and construction materials used in federally funded infrastructure projects are made in the USA. As a composite building material produced domestically, ekoa meets BABA requirements—making it compliant for use in public infrastructure projects like schools, government offices, and community centers.
