The design challenge
At SLAC, interiors reflect a culture of precision and performance. Even transitional zones—like elevator banks and doorways—must handle constant use while maintaining a clear, intentional design language.
The challenge was to introduce a durable wall surface that protects high-contact areas without adding visual noise.
Material solution
Ekoa in Saldo was applied horizontally across wall surfaces, wrapping key transition points. Its subtle grain and grounded tone introduce warmth, balancing the otherwise utilitarian palette.
Engineered for durability, Ekoa resists scuffs and impact—providing protection where it’s needed most while maintaining a refined, architectural presence.
Experience in the space
Panels are installed with intentional spacing, creating a linear rhythm that brings structure and visual interest to the space. The horizontal layout emphasizes movement through the corridor, turning a functional zone into a designed moment.
Saldo’s natural tone adds depth without distraction, reinforcing clarity and control within the environment.
Sustainability & healthy interiors
Ekoa brings a plant-based material approach into a high-performance research setting. Made from rapidly renewable flax fibers and plant-based resins, it supports lower-impact interiors without compromising durability.
With Red List Free and Clean Air GOLD certifications, an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration), and a published HPD, Ekoa offers both environmental accountability and material transparency. Its ultra-low VOC emissions contribute to healthier indoor air quality—supporting spaces designed for focus and long-term use.
Installation & detailing
Panels were installed horizontally with consistent reveals, creating a precise, repeatable pattern. Clean edge detailing around doors and elevator openings—including precise cutouts for elevator controls—ensures tight transitions and seamless integration with building systems.
Outcome & impact
A compact application with high impact—delivering durability, rhythm, and a quiet layer of material expression in a highly technical environment.
